£ 180 m of European aid, exposed to the risk of North East cuts

EU flags

Resources from the European Union have contributed to creating jobs in the North East.

With pressure on public expenditure have less money available in the region of.

But one source of funding appears to be still in plentiful supply, comes from the EU.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) exists for the creation of jobs in the North East.

The last program began in 2007, with £ 360 m available to tenderers in the region.

She has two years to run and have up to £ 180 m still remains in the pot.

But it seems that cuts public sector in the United Kingdom actually could prevent the North East, getting his hands in a large part of this money.

The EU insists that the grant from the Fund only ever able to finance 50% of the cost of a project-the imposition of the applicant to raise the rest. Without evidence that each project has with the remaining 50% of the funding will be paid on the spot not European subsidy.

In the past a large part of this ' match funding ' as is known, has come from the Agency for regional development of one North East, or local councils.

But one North East has had its operations, reduced in preparation for its elimination and the tips are cutting back.

Companies who want European subsidies, are at risk of being left high and dry.

Hugh Morgan-Williams from the regional CBI says in the last rounds of cuts, banks have stepped in an alternative, but this time they are proving reluctant to undertake.

And in any event, he says, companies that want to get access to the EU money are sometimes risky proposals, which will attract the banks.

They often begin with unproven business ideas.

One example is the UK Haptics in Newcastle. When it started the first, the company struggled to find all financed.

Virtual reality technology

UK Haptics using European assistance to develop systems for virtual reality to help medical personnel practice their techniques.

It uses the technology of nedokazalite to a large extent is virtual reality. The company is saved however, when it secured £ 50 000 from the Fund, which is composed of the money from the ERDF and one North East.

This helps it develop systems, allowing the medical staff to practice procedures for virtual patients.

Business has just won £ 1 m contract with the pharmaceutical company and plans to double the work force. But managing director Gary Todd is clear that the activity would not if it is not for a grant.

And by 2007, assessed the ERDF money have created jobs for 2 500 and helps the 5000 companies.

So you can add to these data to lose?

North East Labour MEP Stephen Hughes thinks so. He believed that the Government is pulling the carpet in the region.

He says, without European aid to the North East can be a huge disadvantage in a time when each project to additional questions.

His Conservative colleague Martin Callanan admits match, financing from public authorities is now in short supply. But he believes that good projects will still be raising funds from the private sector.

And he says that there is some doubt as to whether the ERDF has offered North East value for money in the past.

It will be some time before we know whether the EU will end up unspent. There are still more than two years in order to find new sources of funding for the match.

But some doubt the Government can not too heartbroken if the North East does not succeed.

Although the money initially will return to Brussels, a large part of this would then be returned to the United Kingdom as a reduction of contributions to the budget of the EU of t is.

So that North East loss would still finance profit.

Sony CLIE PEG-T615C/S Handheld (Silver)

Sony CLIE PEG-T615C/S Handheld (Silver)Having already dipped its toe in the ocean that is the PDA market with the Clie PEG-SN760C and the PEG-S300 models, Sony has now jumped in with a second-generation color model--the PEG-T615C. Featuring the same 33 MHz DragonBall processor, high-resolution 320 x 320 color screen, and jog wheel functionality, it also boasts 16 MB of internal RAM, the latest version of the Palm OS (v. 4.1), and a superslim aluminum body.

Very similar in design to Sony's previous color model, the Clie PEG-T615C features the same Jog Dial button, allowing for easy, one-handed navigation around applications. The scroll buttons have been replaced with a tiny rocker switch, which doesn't function as easily as the original buttons. Also, the included flipover screen protector does have a tendency to detach from the unit a bit too easily.

The Memory Stick slot has been retained, allowing for increased expandability. Battery life runs at about 15 days before a recharge is required, though this does depend entirely on how much you use the PDA.

The PEG-T615C has lots of little pluses that make it stand out from the rest. It sits in the cradle nicely and it doesn't make a horrible crunching sound when it's removed, unlike some PDAs. Clie-specific applications such as the AV Remote Commander, World Alarm (which allows you to use your own sound files), Sound Utility, and Clie Paint are fun to play around with. Those of you wanting to do some serious work will be pleased with Documents To Go and Intellisync Lite. The latest version of the Palm OS includes easier data entry and enhanced security and mobile connectivity.

However, the standout feature on the PEG-T615C has to be the high-resolution screen--the images are sharp and detailed, while the text is supersmooth. It makes other PDA displays look positively archaic.

With its bright color screen, superior sound quality, and supersleek body, the PEG-T615C is probably the best (and sexiest) Palm OS-based PDA on the market at the moment and well worth your consideration. --Martin Snelling

Pros:

  • Bright, high-resolution color screen
  • 16 MB of memory that's expandable with Memory Sticks
  • Superslim
  • Fun Sony add-on programs
Cons:
  • New rocker switch replacing scroll buttons not as functional
  • Flip screen protector detaches too easily

Test Policy Board reviews

Randolph County Board of education passed the second reading of the policy that required random drug testing for student athletes and drivers.

During a meeting on Monday, two people spoke against a policy that violates the rights of Amendment 4 for students.

He said former teacher in Randolph County Board hodok Phil "that what we have here no probable cause". "(Students) are responsible for their parent."

The Board approved the second reading of the policy of taking sample poems from a random selection of student drivers and athletes. Each student will be tested not participating in any activity or drives, random drug testing will be selected. High school and middle school would be subject to random selection, according to the policy.

If a student is found using the drugs, crime, parent or guardian will meet with the principal and driving privileges be abolished until a guardian present student guide was transmitted to the Office monitoring events in Randolph County and is requesting access to drugs and counseling. If the consent of parents and students, student resume activity and/or driving to school.

Any crime again, all privileges will be suspended for 90 days and that could take and then another student drug testing. A third student commenting will drive or engage in activity for one year.

Hodok and Sarah Murray agreed that policy violates the fourth amendment because it will be tested without reason to believe the student is the consumption of illegal drugs.

Hodok said "children are a defence against this". "I think it is bad policy. I don't see the problem of drugs is rampant. "

Murray said although it believes that the Council had "purists," should reconsider approval policy. Wondered why cost was notable athletes, drivers, and if policy will extend to trained teachers, staff and Board members. She even called negative experiences of drug abuse remains "is guilty peers."

Superintendent Dr. James Knight spoke to the Council before the vote, recalled that still have the opportunity to change this policy prior to implementation.

Knight said that "this is not a final decision until the comment period on 4 April.

The Council approved the measure unanimously at second reading.

"Now, this policy out for review," said Council President Lisa wamslii "intirmontin" following the meeting. "We welcome comments from the public to examine policies for student athletes and drug drivers".

The Council will meet again on April 4 at 6 pm in the Office of the province.

How to improve your health naturally with Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

How a big disaster starts.

One small change in the way you feel every day may portend your health disaster. Sometimes your symptoms are so small and seem so unimportant that you don't pay attention. But they are really warning symptoms of what could possibly be a disaster.

You are in your 40s or 50s. You have everything you were dreaming of: beautiful kids, a wonderful spouse, big house or apartment and a wonderful job or business. Everything is going smoothly. And you think, that it is time to relax and enjoy life. Suddenly you feel like you are on fire, you turn red and start sweating. And it happens at the worst time, while you are in bed with your beloved or speaking to one of your customers. A few minutes later the hot flush is gone, but it comes back again and again and again. But now, you are waiting for it every minute, and it makes you crazy.

You notice that you forget where you left your keys and credit cards, you started forgetting about your appointments and now you need to make a shopping list, which you never did before. Then you start yelling at your loved ones - your children and your spouse without reason and you do not understand why. You feel like you cannot control yourself any more. When it comes to sex, you are not enjoying it any more. It's become painful now, but avoiding it is now causing more problems with your spouse.

One problem after another comes into your life...one new alarm after another goes off. The final disaster in your life has happened -- you are not yourself anymore.

One tiny emotional failure in your relationship can lead to drama in your life, but the measurement of this failure was inconspicuous and you hardly noticed it in the beginning. You were together with your spouse and kids for many years but suddenly a strong turbulence is shaking your lives. Your relationships have started to go disastrously wrong.

One after another, the autopilots in your lives shut off and what used to always work isn't working anymore. Quickly, you are being sucked into the waves, with no way to save yourself.

You're screaming out and crying for help, but there's nothing ahead but despair. The life you worked so hard to get is now sinking.

It's at about the age of 40 that everything begins. You want to give all your love to your spouse and your children. Instead you have a mood swing and shout at them making them unhappy. You start arguing more with your spouse, start passing up on invitations to go out with your friends because you are tired. But you used to always be the first one there.

Then it was Sunday. Sex time! It's a duty and routine now. Suddenly this day felt like a chore for you. You do not have the fantasy and energy that you had before.

Suddenly, you start feeling Hot... hotter!! And then sweating, you realize you are suffering from hot flushes!

You are not feeling pleasure and emotions like before. Finally, after the chore of sex is over, you try to fall asleep, but now you cannot. Your spouse is angry with you because you are keeping him or her awake. Finally at four o'clock in the morning you fall sleep, only to have to wake up in two hours. You wake up in the morning very sleepy and tired, cannot open your eyes and now you feel like you need your morning coffee. You go to the bathroom to take a shower, look at the mirror and you see wrinkles on your face, wrinkles that you didn't see before. You start putting creams and make up to cover them but every time gets more difficult to cover them and you feel like you are losing control of your life.

You go to your primary care physician, then to a psychiatrist, but do not get any answers. But you need an answer now, because you are not yourself any more. You were at a point in your life, finally, where you were happy with your work, with your status in life, with your family life, with your sex-life. Everything was running smoothly. For the past 40 or 50 years, you have treated your body right, and it, in turn has treated you right.

Until you start noticing little changes creeping in. Wrinkles? A little, for now. Mood swings? Slightly harder to deal with. Loss of energy? Causing a kink in your plans. Loss of libido? Bringing some major tension into the house. Is it the beginning of a disaster? What's going on with your health?

Could it be one simple test that can prevent the disaster? Could your disaster start even before your first symptom?

Going through menopause or andropause is like trying to cross a stormy Atlantic ocean in a tiny boat. But nobody prepared you for this at all!

What Official Medicine can do for you to get your life back.

No one is able to explain to you why you are suffering and what needs to be done. To your anger, your doctor, whom you love very much, says, that everything is OK with you. It is just aging, which is normal. But you know something is disastrously wrong. You have to get the answer now or you may die.

Official Western medicine does not give an answer to this question. "There are no lifestyle changes, surgical procedures, vitamins, antioxidants, hormones, or techniques of genetic engineering available today with the capacity to repeat the gains in life expectancy that were achieved during the 20th century " according to demographer S. Jay Olshansky of University of Illinois in Chicago as well as 51 longevity experts in their position statement in 2002.

That is why I had to launch my own investigation, based on scientific studies and my own experience. I did not have a choice but to do it, because I was going through andropause myself.

My investigation was based on facts and common sense, not controlled studies. This method was used by doctor James Lind in about 1750 when he discovered how to fight scurvy. Six groups of two sailors were used. And one group which was given oranges and lemon - improved. The same method was used by doctor Edward Jenner in 1796, when he invented vaccination.

What would happen to the mankind if they would require double blind controlled studies to prove that vaccination is working for smallpox and lemon for scurvy? We would be dead. If the treatment is really working you do not need double blind controlled studies to prove it.

It is like your keys for your home door. It is either fits or not. You do not need double blind controlled studies to figure this out. Normally an investigation like this is done by a group of scientists. And it should be financed. Usually it is a big pharmaceutical company that invests money in the scientific study. And they did it before: they created drugs that mimic human hormones.

How they created a fake to poison you.

Because natural substances like hormones cannot be patented, they had to come up with something else. Instead of the most important women's hormone estrogen they offered modified horse estrogens to produce "estrogen" for our women. Instead of the second important women's hormone progesterone they offered drugs, that sound like natural progesterone, but actually are synthetic -- Progestins. Why would they name the synthetic stuff like natural?

In the beginning everybody was happy: patients, because they felt better, doctors, because it was less work for them, pharmaceutical companies, because they were getting money.

Until Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study came out.

Synthetic and semisynthetic hormone mimicking drugs Premarin and Prempro were jewels in the crown of the pharmaceutical company Wyeth. Their sales almost reached 1 billion dollars in 2001 1. But even Big Pharma could not conceal the WHI damaging conclusions. What they found was that synthetic or semisynthetic hormones are linked to many life-threatening conditions like cancer and blood clots.

They are linked to cancer. They can cause blood clots. Low testosterone and decreased libido as well as gallstones are the complications of synthetic hormones, etc.

But the drugs were on the market already. And they were very profitable. So what they had to do was to warn patients about the risks, but continue to sell the drugs. Who wants to stop money coming? But how did it happen that FDA approved drugs with life threatening side effects?

It is 2009. New York Times magazine Reporter Natasha Singer is looking into hormone replacement therapy drugs. But she is not interested in how those drugs were approved. After the scandals with Troglitazone or Trovan nobody is excited about it. She was interested in a much more important thing: how it happened that doctors recommended harmful drugs. What they found was: it was ghostwritten medical papers, signed by doctors, that created medical " consensus".

Can We Trust Such "Scientific" Articles?

I still remember my 27 year old female neighbor, who died because of a clot in her legs that went to her lungs. She was on birth control pills. Since then I decided not to advise traditional synthetic hormones to my patients.

So I arrived to my first solid conclusion: no synthetic or semisynthetic hormones, because:

But do you need hormones at all? May be you can get back your life with diet and supplements? Or may be all you need to do is to bring your cholesterol down? Yoga? Meditation?

I still remember my first patient, suffering from heart attack: gasping, cold sweat, fear in his eyes and death imprinted on his face. Or one of my cancer patients suffering from

excruciating pain. Or Alzhemer's patients, who know about their problem and are ashamed of it. Maybe all we need to do is to get treatment for heart, cancer and dementia?

Why Eskimo do not have heart attacks

During my medical training I was told many times, that heart attacks are due to high cholesterol. What I did not know was about the Danish Eskimo study.

Danish scientists Bang and Dyerberg discovered that Eskimos almost never die of heart attacks, the number one killer, despite the fact that they did not have that low cholesterol.

So it was not actually cholesterol, that kills! And they knew about it since the 1970s! It must be something else. What about cancer? What about Alzheimer's? Swedish scientist from University of Lund Staffan Lindeberg, MD went to Kitava Island in New Guinea to study its 24,000 people population. What he found was that they do not have heart attacks! No cancer! No diabetes! No Alzheimer's! But they die healthy on average at the age of 45 9.

So it is not cholesterol, it is not cancer, it is not dementia, that kills! But what is it then? I was at a dead end. And there was no help in sight. Do you think that Big Pharma will give away money to figure out how to get you better naturally?

Then I made my major breakthrough.

Seeing is believing. Have you ever seen a person who looks twice as young as her real age? I did. She had beautiful skin and shiny eyes. Her dress could not conceal gorgeous curves of her body. Her voice was getting to the bottom of everybody's heart. She looked like she was in her early 30s. In fact she was in her 60s. Her name was Suzanne Somers. Her Fountain of Youth was Bioidentical Hormone Replacement.

After many years in medical field, I had to admit that nothing like that could be achieved with traditional medicine. So maybe what she is doing is right? Maybe what she is saying is correct: "It is not your cholesterol, it is not your blood pressure, it is your hormone decline, that kills you."

Really? How about heart attacks, cancer and Alzheimer's? When you develop chest pain when you are 20, it is pulled muscle. But if you have chest pain in you 70s -- it's a heart attack.

If you lose your key in your 20s, you'll just get a new one. But if you lose your keys in your 70s -- it's Alzeimer's. And you are right: we usually do not have heart attacks, Alzheimer's or cancer in our 20s, when our sex hormone levels are high. But we do have them when our sex hormones are down.

Why?

Because mother nature does not need us that much after we cannot make babies any more. We need to free the space for young individuals, who can. Remember, that there is almost no menopause in the animal kingdom. Fortunately, there is a loophole for humans: menopause and andropause.

Mother nature's concept was simple: to ensure that humans are superior in survival compared to any other species in the world. Therefore humans needed more than simple estrous cycle in animals. It was menopause in females and andropause in males, that changed everything.

Normally a fertile woman has her ovaries with plenty of eggs that are released in cycles. To get pregnant in the beginning of her menstrual cycle she produces sex hormone Estrogen, which makes the follicles with eggs to grow. When the egg is big enough, it is Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone surge that, along with Estrogen, make the follicle break -- a process called ovulation.

Then ovaries start producing another sex hormone Progesterone. Freed egg is then going to the uterus that is already prepared by Progesterone. If there is a sperm there, then pregnancy commences. If not, then egg is going out and Estrogen and Progesterone production ceases, uterus lining is gone, blood vessels become open and menstrual bleeding starts. Then the Estrogen production starts again, and uterus lining is restored. Bleeding is over, and woman is ready for another cycle. These cycles continue, until there are no more eggs in woman's ovary. When there are no more eggs, periods stop and menopause begins. Sounds simple. But there is a problem here: an average woman has about 1 million eggs, but she uses only about 400.

Why are the rest of her eggs wasted? Instead of using those eggs, women go into menopause and men go into andropause.

Why would mother nature invest in longevity but not in fertility? The reason why still remains the mystery.

Maybe it is because mother nature wants a postmenopausal woman to take care of her daughter's children so that she can make more babies? This is what Grandmother's theory is saying. Or maybe that is because older males can compete with youngsters to

make competition more tough because older males are more experienced and sophisticated? This is what the Patriarch hypothesis is saying.

It does not matter why nature decided to give us menopause and andropause. What matters is: we do have a loophole to live longer. The only thing we have to do is to pretend that we are still young. But how?

How to Pretend to Be Young

1930, Canada, McGill University, Department of Biochemistry.

A young Chairman, Professor Dr. James Collip, who just co-discovered Insulin, was thinking how to get relief of menopausal disaster. After series of experiments and failures he eventually found the solution. What he did was: he extracted estrogen from the urine of pregnant women and gave it as a menopausal remedy. And it did work. Because giving natural hormones of fertile women to postmenopausal individuals was a signal to their bodies that they are still fertile. That is how we can pretend that we are still young. Have you ever run out of gas? Certainly. But you did not think, that it is the end of the world, and your car is not going to run anymore. What you did was: you went to a gas station and filled up the tank, right?

Same here: because you ran out of eggs or sperm, you just need to fill your body with hormones, which are exactly the same as your own. But what hormones exactly we are talking about here? Mainly Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone.

Have you ever seen a picture of Marilyn Monroe? Sure. And you admired her, right? What you did not realize was: she is the perfect example of a woman, full of Estrogen: confidence, strong desire to have sex, big breasts and low waist to hip ratio. That is why estrogen is sometimes called "Marilyn Monroe Hormone".

Estrogen plays a critical role in a human's body. It is responsible for breast development, vagina lubrication, burning fat, maintaining your bones, skin and vessels, bringing your good cholesterol up and bad cholesterol down, etc. Because it works as an antioxidant, it protects your brain. No estrogen -- mood problems, memory problems, etc. But estrogen alone is not enough.

Confidence and strong sexual desire should be balanced, otherwise they will go too far. And the hormone, that does the job is Progesterone.

Have you ever seen pregnant women? They are calm because they have plenty of Progesterone. Do you know, that a cup of milk in the evening may help to get better

sleep? What you do not know is: milk contains Progesterone, that may help you to calm down, along with calcium and milk protein Casein. Also what you should know, is that Casein in your stomach is broken to CasoMorphin which is an Opioid ( like a street drug )?

Of course Progesterone is not Morphin, but it calms down, normalizes blood pressure, works as a natural diuretic and antidepressant. Its main job is to balance Estrogen. Did you know, that Progesterone is not only a sex hormone? It is also a Neurosteroid, that is produced in your brain and is necessary for its normal function. But again, Estrogen and Progesterone are not enough. There should be something, that gives us the energy and sense of well-being, as well as ability to maintain our muscles, mental and muscle energy and libido. It is hormone Testosterone that does the job.

1889, Paris, France. Aging former Harvard professor and now Professor of Experimental Medicine of College de France Doctor Charles -- Edouard Brown -- Sequard, is looking for an elixir of youth. He is a shrewd observer and a talented scientist. His name is immortalized in the modern neurology by the spinal cord damage syndrome, bearing his name. But he was aging as anybody else. He was desperately looking for a remedy, and he found one, later called Brown-S?quard Elixir. What he did was: he self injected an extract from guinea pigs testicles. According to him his vigor was back, his sense of well-being was back. His Elixir was Testosterone. It was the famous medical journal, The Lancet, that first published his observations.

Do you think he was prized for his discovery? Actually his colleagues were laughing at him. It took them 40 years to rediscover the importance of Testosterone. Now we know, that it is not only for sex drive, erections and muscles. It is also to maintain you bones and protect you from Diabetes, Alzheimer's, heart disease etc.

Bottom line: we need all of them: bioidentical Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosteone ( women and men -- both ).

Are Bioidentical Hormones officially recommended?

Not a single other treatment ignited so many debates and controversy, as Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy ( BHRT). The official medicine including FDA, International Menopause Society, American Medical Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Mayo clinic, Endocrine Society, etc., is saying, that Bioidentical Hormones carry the same risks as synthetic hormones and there is no evidence of any other benefits of Bioidenticals.

I wonder, why so perfect a consensus is about it. Recently two branches of Government Research were trying to figure out if Chronic fatigue syndrome is associated with with exotic XMRV virus. One group (Harvey Alter, FDA and National Institutes of Health) found that yes, another group (William Switzer, CDC) found that no.

If the scientists, who use the same methods and testing the same virus, cannot come to the same conclusion, then how could they be so unanimous in much more complicated subject as Bioidentical Hormones?

Also, the FDA is saying that risks of Bioidenticals are the same as synthetic. Based on what? Did they test Bioidentical Hormones? Not that I know of. They assumed, that Bioidenticals work the same as synthetic, which we know are harmful.

It is like saying that one dollar bill has the same value as 100 dollar bill, because they are the same size.

On the other hand the proponents of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy are saying, that Bioidenticals are safe and have no side effects.

Two French studies, published in 2008, suggest, that Bioidenticals are safer, that conventional BHRT. According to Dr. Kent Holtorf's literature review "Physiological data and clinical outcomes demonstrate that bioidentical hormones are associated with lower risks, including the risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, and are more efficacious than their synthetic and animal- derived counterparts. Until evidence is found to the contrary, bioidentical hormones remain the preferred method of HRT. Further randomized controlled trials are needed to delineate these differences more clearly."

Even some prominent clinicians have to admit publicly the advantages of Bioidenticals. According to Dr. Christine Derzko, Chief of Endocrinology at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, "Despite the weak evidence, some promising preliminary data are emerging, suggesting that pharmaceuticals containing BH ( Bioidentical Hormones -- Sergey Kalitenko ), estradiol and progesterone, have equal (and in some cases, lower) risk compared with other CHT ( conventional hormone therapy -- Sergey Kalitenko ).

Normally we need controlled randomized studies of the efficacy and safety of Bioidentical Hormones. But there is no such study in sight. Do you think Big Pharma will invest money in something, that cannot be patented and therefore will unlikely to be profitable?

But what do we do, if we do not have long term studies so far? Let see what experts say: " I always tell clinicians, that until we have definite randomized trial data -- which we may never have -- whatever patient wants to do is the correct decision", -- says Dr. Speroff, who is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Oregon Health and Science University and a sub-specialist in reproductive endocrinology - one of the most respected OB -- GYN doctors in the US,

He is the founder and recently stepped down as director for the Women's Health Research Unit at OHSU. Doctor Speroff has gained prominence in the area of women's health throughout his publications, national and international lectures and extensive work on clinical trials.

But do Bioidentical Hormones really work? Do they really prolong life? Or may be they are another myth? I was desperately looking for the answer, but could not find the right one.

How they found longevity secrets.

My next breakthrough came unexpectedly -- from Blue Zones study.

Because official medicine does not give us the longevity prescription, not doctors, but National Geographc reporter Dan Buettner decided to look for the areas on Earth, where people live longer, than in the other areas. And he and his group found such areas.

To get the truth about longevity secrets he and other members of his expedition went to identified Blue Zones: Sardinia, Italy: Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California, US; Nicoya, Costa Rica. They decided to learn from real people, not from theory, how to live longer. But what did they find?
Longevity lessons from real long living people for Blue Zones:

1. Get enough sun exposure.
2. Eat nuts and tomatoes
3. Be social.
4. Restrict your calorie consumption.
5. Move naturally.
6. Drink enough water.

Sounds like nothing unusual. But somehow together they worked much better than any other protocol suggested. What was the secret behind Blue Zones lessons?

The solution came unexpectedly. While investigating about tomato benefits, I learned that the most valuable their component antioxidant lycopene is going to the testes, adrenal glads and liver. Looked like tomato are protecting endocrine glands from oxidaive stress, but for what? To make sure that they make enough hormones! And I said to myself: "Gee! Maybe it is all about hormones!"

Being social means less stress and hence less harmful cortisol, and therefore more another steroids like estrogen, progesteone and testosterone. Calorie restriction is proven to raise Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels. Sun exposure is about vitamin D, which is considered more as a hormone now.

Forget for a second about Blue Zones. The longest living person on Earth Jeanne Calment, who lived for 122 years and 165 days, was riding a bicycle at age 100 and broke her hip at age 114. This means, that she had enough Estrogen to maintain her bones!

Another centenarian, from Nicoya, named Rafael Angel Leon Leon, had multiple girlfriends until age 94, then he married a woman, who was 40 years younger then he was! Nobody marries an older person who cannot have sex! Therefore Mr. Rafael Leon had enough testosterone to have sex!

Looks like longevity is all about hormones. But what about safety?

It is like trying to answer the question if drinking water is safe. Yes, but in moderation. If you drink it too much your brain will swell to the extent that you may die.

Obviously estrogen itself is not a problem, because your body cannot produce poisonous hormone. The problem comes when it is too much estrogen, that leads to increased cancer risk or it is converted into poison, that causes cancer.

Normally the main body estrogen - estradiol or E2, is removed from your body very fast by 2 ways:

1. It is converted into 2 OH estrone, which is benign.
2. Estradiol binds to bile in the gut, becomes water soluble and then is eliminated via

kidneys. So estradiol is removed. No poison made. Danger is over.

But on 3 conditions:

1. Your body knows what to do with hormone.
2. There are enough enzymes to do the job.
3. Your gut functions properly and does not have wrong bacteria in it.

If even a single condition is not met -- you might be in danger.

Your body does not know that to do with synthetic and semisynthetic estrogens. Therefore instead of 2 OH estrone they are transformed into 4 OH estrone, which leads to free radical formation and therefore cancer.

Bioidenticals mostly do not have this problem, but what if your body does not have enough enzymes? Or your gut is not functioning properly?

Fortunately we can monitor what your body is doing with estrogen and most of the time make it right.

Bottom line is simple:

Get more energy, better sleep, mood, productivity and sex life with Hormone Balancing. You can get better with Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy ( BHRT ), but be aware of the risk involved. Doing nothing does not bring you anywhere. What can help you is finding the root cause of your problem and solving it.

Bioidentical Hormone replacement is very effective and reasonably safe.

To me it is more than using Bioidenticals, it is about using a holistic, individualized approach instead of standard protocols. To me it is about using natural remedies instead of potentially toxic drugs. To me it is about finding the root cause of your problem, instead of just treating your symptoms. Now it is your turn to decide what is right for you.

Blue Zones check list -- how to live longer:
1. Get enough sun light to get plenty of vitamin D, but not too much. Monkey on the beach sunbathing?
2. Restrict your calorie intake, your but still get enough calories to fight infection or stress.
3. Eat plenty of tomatoes.
4. Move naturally. Remember monkey in the gym?
5. Eat handful of nuts regularly.
6. Drink enough water.
7. Be social.

My suggestions:
1. Have enough sleep (at least 8 hours a day).
2. Follow Paleolithic diet -- avoid processed food!
3. Balance your hormones!

The shocking tendency to ' make ' Injectables

Raise your hand if you found yourself at your local B&Q on a bank holiday weekend, buying up half of the store for a DIY project on the spare bedroom...

As a nation, we think nothing of embarking on such do-it-yourself household projects in the vain hope that the money we will save on not employing a qualified builder, decorator, electrician, plumber etc. will more than make up for the less than professional finish to the job in hand!

Now, hands up those of you who would also be prepared to shun the expert advice of a cosmetic practitioner and instead opt to self-administer unknown cosmetic injectables...

Hopefully no-one raised their hands this time; but unfortunately with the global growth and reach of the Internet and recent economic hardships, the 'DIY cosmetic jab' is becoming easier and easier to obtain. Online retailers are springing up overnight to satisfy the growing demand in the USA and more recently the UK, for cheaper alternatives to in-clinic injectable treatments, which people seem more than happy to self-administer with instructions not dissimilar to those of a flat-packed wardrobe!

We investigate this worrying development.

Global Recession Hits Beauty Spend

The current economic collapse has come as a bit of a shock to the British and American public and led to some swift belt tightening and bargain hunting, with fewer of us making large purchases or spending as freely on luxuries, and foreign holidays.

In the boom years of the early 'noughties' we were all happy to 'splash the cash' and splurge on a bit of retail therapy and hard earned pampering, even if it was courtesy of Mr VisaR and Mrs MastercardR.

With more and more aesthetic clinics opening the length and breadth of the country in the last decade, and minimally invasive, non-surgical treatments, not only becoming more widely available, but more socially acceptable and affordable, we all rushed out to be at the front of the queue to look ten years younger, wallets waving in the air.

Then with the overnight collapse of many high street banks, the rise in unemployment figures, the drop in interest rates and the drying up of credit facilities, money has suddenly become a much more precious commodity to many households than it was before, and every penny is now being accounted for.

Needless to say, the UK aesthetic and beauty industries seem to be weathering the economic storm pretty well so far, despite the lack of available credit for many people. This appears to be primarily due to the effect of the 'baby-boomers' who are now coming of age, (currently aged 45 - 63), and their continued availability of disposable income, plus a desire to retain their careers and thus their youth.

However, surgical procedures, which do require a larger cash investment (often previously financed by loans), have seen a slump in demand according to some experts; with the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) admitting earlier this year that the industry is in the middle of a "slowdown" and that this year could see the first decline in cosmetic surgery audit figures.

Conversely, The Harley Medical Group, the UK's largest cosmetic surgery group with an annual turnover of £35million, recently reported a year on year growth to the end of June 2009 of 4% and has opened 6 more clinic locations in that time. Chairman, Mel Braham was quoted as saying; "Despite the recession we're seeing increases in surgical and non-surgical procedures at our existing clinics and that's why we've committed to an expansion programme".

Although a report published in May 2009 by analysts Research and Markets did note that the UK cosmetic surgery market had experienced only a modest growth in 2008, which was a change from its previously remarkable year-on-year increases between 2004 and 2007.

Despite these differing reports, many other industry participants are reporting a dramatic fall in the number of operations such as breast augmentation and cosmetic rhinoplasty in women under 30, who are typically being refused credit and have no other financial means for payment. This also appears to be the case with finance options previously provided by clinics for courses of non-surgical treatments such as laser hair removal, laser lipolysis and on-going treatment programmes.

Yet where the financial means dries up, the desire to look good and youthful (often at any cost!) still remains and unfortunately there seems to be a growing trend in America in the sale and use of Do-It-Yourself kits for cosmetic injectables such as dermal fillers and botulinum toxins, as well as high strength chemical peels and fat dissolving (injection lipolysis) kits.

This worrying consequence of an economic downturn is now lapping at the shores of Britain, due in the main to the ease with which cheap, copy-cat or generic products, often hailing from China, can be bought via the Internet (without prescription) and shipped around the world, escaping the watchful eyes of customs authorities.

We covered the growing Chinese industry for hyaluronic acid filler based products in last month's feature article - China- Country of Cosmetic Filler Counterfeiters or Genuine Commerce? - and it is this availability of cheap, generic products, along with botulinum toxins produced by the same Chinese manufacturers that is fuelling the growth in online sales direct to a price conscious audience who are convinced that 'eggs is eggs' when it comes to the contents of a syringe.

DIY Kits Available Online

We think nothing of turning to Google(TM), or other popular search engines, every time we want to find the answer to a burning question or source a product or local service, and it would seem that the availability of cosmetic injectables, direct to your door, is just as easy to find.

A quick 'Buy Botox', 'Buy Cosmetic Fillers' and 'Buy Dermal Fillers' search revealed a ready source of websites happy to supply substitute, generic, clone, copy-cat or even counterfeit products claiming to be just the same as well known brands, at a fraction of the cost of visiting your local clinic and sourcing the genuine products.

Prices start from around $150 (currently approx. £90) for a complete DIY kit which includes needles, saline for toxin reconstitution, 'helpful' directions, including a facial map of injection sites, and a 100 unit vial of botulinum toxin type A, or around $130 (approx. £80) for a 1ml syringe of hyaluronic acid.

Both of these types of kits are happily offered for shipping to the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom with claims of 100% success rate at getting the packages through customs and to the end purchaser. Such statements in themselves highlight the shady nature of this e-commerce activity.

One website, run by a woman from Dallas, Texas, claims that having visited a clinic three times she wondered if she could indeed do the procedure herself as it seemed so quick and painless. Plus, she reasoned that if she could do it herself, she wouldn't have to pay the high price charged at the clinic. From there she sourced the products through the clinic where she worked and set about offering the products to her friends and family for their own home-use. She now claims to be proud to be offering a method to obtain the same products and results for home-use, as is available where she works.

In fact so confident is she in her ability to 'help' individuals to 'do-it-yourself' that she has various videos on You Tube(TM) demonstrating just how to use the botulinum toxin kits that she sells and how to give yourself a lip augmentation using hyaluronic acid. Such videos, widely distributed by this video hosting site, are considered by them to be within their Terms of Service and Community Guidelines so do not attract enforcement measures, despite being undesirable and downright irresponsible.

More worrying perhaps is the fact that some of these sites are also selling PMMA (polymethyl and methacrylate) based dermal fillers direct to the public. This is a permanent filler substance more commonly known to practitioners as an ingredient in the FDA approved ArtefillR branded product.

As this substance is not metabolised by the body, as ultimately seen with neurotoxins and hyaluronic acids, the potential for serious adverse reactions and complications from self-administration is heightened yet further in non-medical hands and any results will of course be 'permanent'. Aside from the general risks of self-injection without medical knowledge, the DIY use of such substances could well result in problems such as product migration, infiltration into other tissues, such as vascular areas - causing blockage of arteries resulting in tissue necrosis, granulomas (small lump formation) and allergic reactions.

Even in the hands of professional clinicians, such permanent products are often felt to be less desirable treatment options as they can cause lasting complications, depending on injection techniques and individual tissue reactions. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reported in June of this year that 1 in 4 of its members had treated patients who needed surgery due to complications with permanent fillers in the past year.

Additionally, it was noted during our investigations that some of the online retailers offering hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers direct to the public are supplying them with XylocaineR, which is a 1% mix of lidocaine, a local anaesthetic for pain relief and epinephrine, also know as adrenaline, which restricts blood flow to the area injected to reduce bruising.

According to the online retailer, this prescription-only-medicine (both in the USA and the UK), can be mixed together with the filler substance using a syringe exchanger that they supply, as a means of reducing the discomfort from self-injecting into the lips or deep folds, such as the naso-labial region.

A standard 20ml bottle of XylocaineR is supplied, without the requirement to present a prescription, with instructions to mix 1ml of the XylocaineR with the purchased 1.1ml or 2.1ml syringe of hyaluronic acid filler.

Many of the large, mainstream brands available in the UK, such as JuvedermR ULTRA and RestylaneR now have products which come with a 0.3% lidocaine composition for increased patient comfort and recently it was approved by the U.S. FDA that practitioners may mix Radiesse(TM) (a non-HA filler) with 2% lidocaine using a syringe exchanger.

The manufacturers of XylocaineR note that special care should be taken in the use of this product as it must not be injected intravenously, i.e. into a vein or blood vessel. When injecting a product, medical professionals will (where possible) perform aspiration when using lignocaine directly i.e. for lip blocks, by pulling back on the syringe after inserting the needle to check for blood flow which would indicate entrance into a vascular area, to make sure that they were not injecting into a blood vessel. Non-medics, self-injecting would not be aware of this practice, or the risks involved with this product and could cause increases in heart rate if incorrectly injecting XylocaineR. The risk of overdose is minimal due to the quantities involved, but clearly harm could be done and should only be placed in the hands of medics.

Dr. David Eccleston, Medical Director of MediZen Ltd and medical advisor to The Consulting Room(TM) comments;

''When I read that people were actually considering ordering and using such products off the Internet, I had to read it twice more before I believed it. Of all the drugs used in medicine, lidocaine and adrenaline are two of the drugs doctors must use only with accurate dosing, proper patient counselling and past medical history all being taken into account. In these circumstances, such medications are safe and useful in cosmetic treatments in the hands of an expert. No-one should be given such drugs outside a registered HCC approved clinic or hospital, GP or dental surgery unless in an emergency situation. Using such products outside of this could easily lead to a fatality.''

Snake Oil?

The sale of ANY dermal filler or botulinum toxin to the general public is very worrying in itself, however it becomes even more concerning to think that often potential purchasers will be taking these websites on face value and trusting that what they supply is indeed what they say it is.

It is impossible to tell with the naked eye just what is contained within the supplied syringes or vials, which the online retailers market as simply generic 'alternative' products to the major brands. It may well be that genuine ingredients, (albeit unproven ones in terms of clinical safety data), are contained within the syringes and vials supplied, but they could also contain other, more unconventional substances or additives, simply labelled up as a pure neurotoxin or hyaluronic acid, to which a purchaser would be none the wiser.

Additionally, in the case of botulinum toxins, which are biological products, there exists a quality control route in the UK whereby the licensed brands, such as BotoxR, VistabelR, AzzalureR, XeominR & DysportR are checked to verify that the products actually are what they say they are. The National Institute for Biological Standards & Control (www.nibsc.ac.uk), part of the Health Protection Agency, checks each batch of toxin produced by a manufacturer before it is allowed into the supply chain. Tests are done on random vials within a batch to check for the calibration, i.e. that the actual number of units in a vial matches what is quoted on its packaging, as well as the potency of the toxin within. Certain benchmarks or tolerances are established for these tests, and should anything have gone wrong during production which means that quality control levels are not met; an entire batch would have to be destroyed in the interest of patient safety, before it ever got into the hands of practitioners.

As you can imagine, such rigorous checking does not exist in other less developed countries and certainly not in the case of the unapproved or unlicensed botulinum toxins now flooding the global market from Chinese sources. It is therefore impossible to verify the unit levels of the vials supplied by online retailers, or their potency, against what they print on the labels, assuming indeed that the vials contain botulinum toxin type A in the first place.

The use of cheap, unapproved botulinum toxins is not something just seen with the non-medical DIY injector.

As recently as 2006, a U.S. doctor from Florida was sentenced to 3 years in prison and had his medical licence withdrawn for injecting himself, his girlfriend and two friends with an unapproved botulinum toxin that was manufactured for research purposes only, i.e. not for human use.

In an effort to procure cheap, generic toxin, the doctor in question, Bach McComb, ended up with a product with a potency much higher than is found in approved products for cosmetic use; thus when he prepared it he didn't dilute it sufficiently prior to injection and all patients, including himself, were hospitalised for poisoning by botulism which causes a paralyzing and life threatening effect. All recovered, but many maintained debilitating side effects for a number of years.

Mr. McComb was given a more lenient jail sentence than the 20 years he originally faced as he too was a victim of his own crime and pleaded guilty to all counts.

The husband and wife team who fronted the company, based in Arizona, which sold Bach McComb and more than 200 doctors around the USA, the research grade toxin, knowing full well that it was likely to be used to treat patients cosmetically, were eventually sentenced to 6 and 9 years in prison and made to pay damages of over $690,000. It was quoted by the FDA investigating authorities that in total they had managed to sell over 3,000 vials of their research toxin via sales conferences.

Several other U.S. doctors have since been fined and imprisoned when they have been found to be using this unapproved, research quality toxin on unsuspecting patients.

So, if a Doctor can make that kind of mistake or bad judgement call, it would be extremely easy for a lay person to think they're getting a good, value for money deal when buying toxin products over the Internet. The possibilities for overdose and serious harm are clearly evident, even in the hands of medically trained professionals who think they know what they're doing with the drugs.

Industry Fights Back

Despite this risk it would seem, from the number of companies advertising and supplying kits, that many consumers are happy to purchase these toxin and dermal filler products and are ready and willing to self-inject.

Nigel Mercer, the President of BAAPS, recently purchased a dermal filler kit over the Internet to see just how easily available these DIY solutions are to the general public. It arrived in a padded envelope with a pre-filled, unmarked syringe and a diagram with instructions on where to inject the product.

Amazed at how easy his purchase had been he said; "The public must understand that injecting fillers requires an expert knowledge of facial anatomy and a degree of dexterity that cannot be done by just anyone. A filler injected into the wrong part of the face can lead to lumps, facial disfigurement, or even cause a stroke."

Similarly, consumer champions, Which?, also investigated this growing trend earlier in the year and were able to buy a 'Botox Kit' via the auction website eBay from a woman based in Texas, (no doubt the same woman we came across in our investigations).

Sarah Kidner, Editor, Which? Computing said at the time; "We were appalled that we were able to buy a DIY Botox kit so easily and we are concerned that the internet is becoming a marketplace for cut-price cosmetic treatments."

Despite botulinum toxin being a prescription medicine in the UK, the medicines regulator, the MHRA are unable to stop anyone from shipping such products to the UK as online retail companies, operating in the USA, fall outside of its jurisdiction. The reliance is therefore on such packages being stopped and seized at UK borders by our Customs teams.

As you can imagine, many believe that this state of affairs is far from ideal and needs to be addressed by global governments, to crack down on the manufacture and shipment of unapproved, untested and potentially harmful pharmaceuticals. As always, it seems we will need a lot more people to get hurt, before action is taken.

Seven proven methods For eggs For hatching brilliant ideas

How do organizations come up with new ideas? And how do they use those ideas to create successful new products, services, businesses, and solutions?

To answer these questions, a team of researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York spent time observing radical innovation projects such as IBM's silicon-germanium devices, GE's digital X-ray, GM's hybrid vehicles, and DuPont's biodegradable plastics. Their key finding? Most of the ideas behind these projects came from "happy accidents" rather than some ongoing process to generate ideas.

In more than a few cases, individuals or small groups were simply "freelancing," working on ideas on their own initiative rather than being directed by some "new venture" board or other idea management system.

"Almost without exception, these idea-generation methods have been applied sporadically, rather than systematically, continuously, and strategically," the Rensselaer researchers concluded. "In no case [we know of] has an ongoing process been set up that regularly requests such ideas. What we observed were one-time acts, or new systems put in place whose staying power remains unproven."

It is little wonder that so many good ideas never even come to the attention of management. Or that so many die short of development--and miles from commercial success. In most companies today, the "practice" of innovation can be likened to the mating of pandas: infrequent, clumsy, and often ineffective. Its practice is largely unchanged from 20 years ago. While the world has changed drastically and organizations pride themselves for having a process for everything, the process of innovation remains ad hoc, unsystematic, piecemeal, seat of the pants, and, as the Rensselaer researchers confirmed, heavily dependent on luck.

Creative, game-changing ideas will always have an element of serendipity to them, and will never be producible on demand. But today's present economic climate of stalled growth and fewer ideas (growth in the number of patent requests have stagnated in recent years) has caused a small but growing group of organizations to rethink how ideas happen and to examine what they can do to implement better innovation processes.

Fortifying the Idea Factory

Three-fourths of companies are consistently disappointed in their innovation results, according to global surveys of executives. But a minority of organizations--the innovation vanguard--recognize the need for change if their results are to improve. Put simply, if good ideas don't get hatched, they won't get launched. The "vanguard organizations," 23 of which we studied for a recently released book, create stronger idea factories by cultivating the conditions whereby "happy accidents" are more likely to occur. The vanguards are, in essence, reinventing inventiveness. They are paying much more attention to the oft-called "fuzzy front end" of innovation where possibilities first come to light. And they are managing these notions in vastly different ways so that large quantities of ideas eventually fill the pipeline and emerge as tangible results.

In reviewing the unconventional methods of these vanguard organizations, we found that, while innovation and breakthroughs can never be commanded from the top, leaders can do much to increase throughput of significant ideas. And indeed they must. We see these leading-edge organizations using seven key strategies for fortifying the idea factory:

Invite everyone in the quest for new ideas. Involve customers in the process of generating ideas. Involve customers in new ways. Focus on the needs that customers don't express. Seek ideas from new customer groups. Involve suppliers in product innovation. Benchmark idea-creation methods.

Clearly the customer plays an important role in these strategies for strengthening the organizational idea factory. It only makes sense. The goal is to create ideas--the building blocks of new products, services, processes, and strategies--the users of which are customers.

Ideation Strategy 1: Involve Everyone in the Quest for Ideas

While suggestion boxes have been around for over 100 years, innovation-vanguard organizations are wiring their suggestion boxes so that they become a powerful, energizing force for corporate creativity.

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS), a global pharmaceutical firm, does not restrict its definition of innovation to activities related to finding the next breakthrough drug. Rather, it sees the need for new ideas in much broader terms and involves employees constantly in the quest. BMS has developed a series of ideation campaigns for internal customers under the leadership of "idea searcher" Marsha MacArthur and her boss Mark Wright, vice president of U.S. market research and business intelligence.

When the patent was about to expire on Glucophage, an oral medication for type 2 diabetes, MacArthur helped coordinate a campaign to solicit ideas on how to get more people to use the drug in the meantime. Rather than classifying this as a marketing problem and letting the people in that functional area work on it, the ideation campaign was a sort of call for ideas to all corners.

The campaign was publicized by employees walking around wearing sandwich boards declaring, "We're waging war on diabetes and we need your help!" Town Hall meetings were set up for the team to describe the problem in greater detail: How do we drive patients to their doctors' offices? How do we get patients to switch from the medications they're currently using?

Tip lines were then set up on BMS's intranet site so employees could submit their ideas. One idea was to run a national campaign declaring war on diabetes. Another, to create a museum for diabetics.

"I was really proud of everybody and the ideas that were submitted," says MacArthur. "They weren't obvious ones like, 'talk to doctors.' We already do that. They were quite well thought out."

That single ideation campaign generated 4,000 inquiries from 429 employees all over the world. In a typical year, idea searcher MacArthur coordinates 20 to 30 such campaigns, both at the division level and enterprise-wide.

Lesson: Organizations can enlarge their pool of ideas by including more employees in the process of new product and service ideation and in solving vexing organizational problems. Start by encouraging them to listen to customers. Don't allow managers, technical specialists, or purchasing, finance, or human resource professionals to participate in new product/service/market development decisions unless they spend at least 20% of their time with current (or future) customers and suppliers.

Ideation Strategy 2: Involve Customers in Your Process

New products are most often initiated by ideas from customers, rather than from in-house brainstorming sessions or developed internally by research and development, according to a study by business researchers Robert G. Cooper and Elko J. Kleinschmidt of McMaster University in Ontario.

If you immediately think "focus groups" when the subject of involving customers comes up, better think again. Vanguard firms are going well beyond such techniques as they seek more powerful insights and ideas.

To maintain its market positioning as the "ultimate driving machine," Munich-based BMW must constantly seek new technologies and design features that keep it slightly ahead of the pack. To accomplish this objective, BMW tossed conventional wisdom to the roadside and created what it calls a Virtual Innovation Agency (VIA) to listen to customers directly. Car buffs worldwide can access the VIA Web site and join online discussions to share their ideas with other enthusiasts around the world--and with the BMW Group.

The VIA submission process allows anyone with Internet access to submit ideas--and the ideas are protected. If the idea has potential, it's routed to the appropriate working group at BMW for follow-up. Within the first week after VIA was launched in July 2001, 4,000 ideas had been received.

Lesson: The traditional focus group needs more focus. Form advisory boards of key customers to serve as sounding boards for ideas. Identify customers who tend to buy the latest versions of your products. These "lead adopters" can provide you with insights about where the market may be headed and how your organization can best position itself.

Ideation Strategy 3: Involve Customers in New Ways

Organizations evolve and embrace new ways of doing things at different rates. Nowhere is this more evident than in the ways they listen to customers. For instance, customer surveys may be old hat to retailers but they blow the lids off homebuilders.

KB Home, a market-leading homebuilder based in Los Angeles, only began surveying customers in the late 1990s; in a very short time it gained insights on new ways of doing business. In Denver, KB Home built houses with fireplaces and basements, assuming that's what everyone wanted. But some buyers weren't biting. CEO Bruce Karatz eavesdropped on a sales pitch to prospective buyers who wanted to save money. The couple said they didn't need a basement, but the salesman kept pushing them to accept it as everyone else had.

Karatz decided then and there to survey customers. Their answers shattered KB Home's preconceived notions about what homebuyers wanted. In Denver, people were more than willing to do without basements when omitting them cut the price by as much as 20%. In Phoenix, where covered porches were thought mandatory, fewer than half of the buyers said they cared about them.

By polling for preferences, KB Home opened up its business to budget-minded buyers. But it also discovered other, more-desirable amenities that customers were willing to pay for: coffee bars in the master bedroom, built-in home offices, and higher-quality windows, for example. This "amenity customization" proved popular for buyers--and traumatic for competitors still locked in to the one-size-fits-all housing approach.

DaimlerChrysler used a more experiential approach to try to divine what fickle car buyers wanted next, turning to anthropology and ethnography for a process known as "archetype research." The development team created a prototype model of a vehicle mixing retro and futuristic design elements. But instead of then testing the prototype with traditional focus groups, such as young men ages 18 to 24, they chose people that represented the entire national culture and studied their emotional responses to the prototype.

The designers realized that participants were looking for protection from "the jungle out there." The retro/futuristic prototype was too playful, too toylike; they seemed to be saying, "Give me a big thing like a tank." The revised design: the PT Cruiser, which was an instant success when it was introduced in North America in 2000.

Lesson: Look outside your own field or industry for ideas on how to get customer input. Automakers, retailers, consumer electronics manufacturers, for instance, are on the leading edge of customer surveying and are often considered the early adopters of ideational techniques.

Ideation Strategy 4: Focus on the Unarticulated Needs of Customers

Another reason traditional focus groups are inadequate idea generators is that they provide feedback only on existing ideas. How do you get feedback on ideas that don't exist?

One approach growing in popularity is to probe the unarticulated needs of customers, asking them to consider hypothetical products and prototypes to see how they would respond.

Consider the microwave oven. Asked why they like it, most people would say it's because it heats food up faster than conventional ovens. Asked how they actually use it, most people might say "to heat up my coffee" or "to pop popcorn." What they don't say--their unarticulated desire--is that when they try to use their microwave to make a "real meal," such as a roast or a steak, the results are ugly, gray, and unappetizing.

GE probed just such unarticulated needs in 1999 and came up with Advantium, a speed cooker for roasts, steaks, and other items. A white hot halogen bulb browns the outside part of the meat while microwaves cook the inside. The result: home-cooked meals that are fast and good.

Another great innovation-vanguard organization is Callaway Golf, creator of the Big Bertha. Callaway's innovators went out to country clubs and public courses and observed how golfers approached the game, quizzing them on how they felt about their skills. The observers discovered that many golfers felt frustrated and intimidated by the game. The unarticulated need was simply to succeed at something they loved doing.

Callaway's breakthrough Big Bertha club features a large and forgiving "sweet spot" and a longer shaft, making it easier for golfers to hit the ball--and to hit it farther. As a result, new players took up the sport--and old players traded in their drivers for Big Berthas. By focusing on customers' unarticulated needs, Callaway's innovators created a blockbuster.

Lesson: Learn from customers by observing what they are not doing, listening to what they are not saying. Recognize the sources of their frustration and find potential ways of eliminating it.

Ideation Strategy 5: Seek Ideas from New Customer Groups

Most organizations should have a good idea of who their customers are. But if you expand your definition of customer, you can also expand your ability to generate winning ideas.

The medical products division of Holland-based Philips Electronics had assumed its only customers were doctors in hospitals, since they were the ones making decisions about medical supplies. But Philips managers looked more deeply at changes in the health-care industry and saw that more services were being provided in nontraditional environments, such as in outpatient clinics, in homes, and even on the street for homeless people.

By asking themselves what these customers in non-hospital environments might need, Philips came up with such products as a stethoscope with improved acoustics to filter out voices, traffic, and other background noise, making it easier for caregivers in chaotic settings to hear heart murmurs or breathing problems.

Lesson: Look at your customers' customers and your competitors' customers. Instead of looking at only the present, look also at the past (former customers) and the future (anyone you haven't done business with yet). Ask how you might meet those customers' needs.

Ideation Strategy 6: Involve Suppliers in Product Ideation

Suppliers can be key partners in the idea-creation process, but many organizations are reluctant to share information with suppliers (who, after all, might be partners with the competition as well). Other obstacles include cultural differences, lack of cooperation, lack of resources, and lack of vision--an inability to conceptualize new opportunities.

The chief global purchaser for a leading consumer products company used to visit suppliers and try to solicit ideas by saying, "If you have any new ideas or technologies you think we'd be interested in, be sure to let us know." Result: zero new ideas.

Now, he brings his problems to his suppliers: "What I need to know, for example, is whether you might have an adhesive that would work well on elderly skin, sensitive skin, bruised skin, diseased skin, and five other kinds of skin that we've identified." This approach encouraged suppliers to contribute to the company's idea-creation process, the manager reported. "Even one of our notoriously noncreative suppliers developed two proprietary materials for the company in the last 12 months. It's unbelievable how excited some of our suppliers get when we ask them to be creative on our behalf." And the seemingly routine procurement process added value to other departments in the organization, from R&D to marketing.

Lesson: Just as you look to your customers for new ideas (such as by detecting their unarticulated needs), think of your organization as your supplier's customer. You, too, have unarticulated needs. Try articulating them and get your supplier's idea-generating capacity working in concert with yours.

Ideation Strategy 7: Benchmark Ideation Methods

Innovation-vanguard organizations actively manage the ideation process by examining its effectiveness and questioning how the ideas-to-results process might be improved. Ideation is not something that should be left to chance.

Ideation specialists can be called on to teach new techniques, shake things up, and inject maverick thinking into the process. One leading-edge ideation specialist is Doug Hall, a former product manager at Procter & Gamble who runs idea sessions at Eureka! Ranch outside Cincinnati, Ohio, for companies like Celestial Seasonings.

Hall's replicable, quantifiable process for inventing breakthrough ideas involves a combination of play, "sensory overload," and analytical rigor. The goal is to generate as many new product ideas as possible: No idea is too radical, he tells his groups. "Breakthroughs are going to contradict history, so you have to break rules," he says. Eureka! Ranch sessions promise clients 30 commercially viable ideas in three days.

Lesson: Organizations that rely on innovation need to seriously examine the climate in which ideation takes place and put someone in charge of making the process better, more productive, and more innovative. Innovation-adept firms invest in ideation sessions, read books, attend seminars, and constantly seek to improve their skills.

Monday Morning at the Idea Factory

As the world changes at a faster and faster pace, ideas and ways of operating that were adequate only yesterday no longer suffice. Given the torrid pace of change, the rapid commoditization of products, and the convergence of strategies, firms that rely on yesterday's ideas, yesterday's products, and yesterday's assumptions are clearly vulnerable.

Organizations need a constant stream of new ideas if they are to create exciting and prosperous futures. Yet, in most organizations, there is resistance to change the approach to innovation lest it upset the status quo. Most companies today have allowed their methods of encouraging, nurturing, and acting on new ideas to languish while they focused on more immediate concerns, such as taking costs out of existing processes and products and services.

Yet because of the present economic climate, firms are increasingly willing to rethink their most central of processes: how they accomplish innovation.

In another study explored Dr. price this

small steel tubes to the root channel from the
